Our Week

Here’s the story of our week.

Margie has been in Houston all week, attending the national Girl Scout Convention. She’s had a wonderful time, saw lots of old friends, and made some new friends. Our former foster daughter, Doreen Brown, was also there, and Margie had a lot of fun visiting with her. Her kids are a mixture of young adults and adolescents, and there’s lots going on in the family. Doreen is a Girl Scout leader with her third daughter. I took Margie to meet her ride on Monday morning. As I write this, she is on her way to visit a friend who lives in Houston.

We had a meeting of the Big Canoe Emergency Response Team on Tuesday evening. The group has a leadership crisis.

I worked a day at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center. I spend most of my time doing data entry.

I operated the chapel sound system twice this week. Today I was carrying out the procedure to stream live video of the service on the internet, which was a challenge, but I think it went well. I had worked most of Thursday with two different consultants getting the equipment working properly and understanding the procedure.

We had a wonderful organ recital at the chapel this evening.

I did lots of training for the new tax season this week.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Our Week

Here’s the story of our week.

I operated the sound system at the chapel for three events this week. One of the speakers wanted to show a video in the center of his program, which created a real challenge for me. I finally learned how to do it, and it worked out fine.

I worked a day at Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center. I got one user’s computer to working when it had failed, and did lots of data entry.

I spent some time at H&R Block. I now know what continuing education I need to qualify to work another season, so I need to get at it.

I decided to use Microsoft Access to keep track of our addresses (including our Christmas list), so I’ve been learning things about Access. It isn’t an easy thing to learn. I found out we need to send 193 paper Christmas greetings, and I haven’t counted the number of electronic ones.

I got a final input for the Bowyer-Lyness newsletter, prepared it, and sent the draft out for review.

We played with our duplicate bridge group on Friday. We scored in the bottom half.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Our Week

Here’s the story of our week.

I worked at Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center again. It went well

I had a fun activity on Thursday morning. A friend called and asked me to help him figure out how to use Corel Paintshop. He likes to print two pictures at a time, both 4 by 6, on a sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 paper, and he was having trouble dealing with the files his pictures were in. I had never done what he wanted, but I figured out how to do it and wrote out a procedure for him. I also did what he wanted done with files.

I presided at the Friends of the Public Library board meeting.

We served communion at the chapel service this morning.

I operated the chapel sound system for a Wednesday evening program and for a Sunday afternoon program.

My former employer (Telcordia) has announced that they won’t contribute anything towards my health care after this year, so I’ve been trying to understand the options for medigap and madicare supplement and everything else. It’s the most complicated issue I’ve ever encountered. I ran out of time on Friday afternoon, so I have to continue next week.

I did a little work on several web sites.

I have been working on my memoirs. This week the publisher sent me the galley copy. There were some problems, but they all got fixed, so the galley copy has been approved.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Our Week

Here’s the story of our week.

I worked at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center two days this week. I’m getting to be fairly confident in my duties.

I operated the sound system for a Wednesday evening program at the chapel. It was a disaster, because I couldn’t get a key piece of equipment to work. We scrambled to get to a “plan B”, and it worked out fairly well.

I presided at a meeting of the Friends of the Pickens County Library on Thursday evening. The program was about a biography, and the subject of the biography was at the meeting in addition to the author.

I sang with the men’s chorus this morning (Sunday).

In between, I’ve been updating several web sites with current information. I was just asked to do some work on some of the documentation of the Big Canoe Emergency Response Team, and that has been fun.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Our Week

Here’s the story of our week.

I attended the monthly meeting of the Big Canoe Emergency Response Team. I’m now the webmaster for the Team, and I gave a status report on what I’m doing to bring it up to date.

I worked at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center on Wednesday and Thursday. On Thursday, I got through the whole day without needing any help from my supervisor, for the first time. I’m getting pretty comfortable with my duties. I found out about a task the scheduling group needs to carry out about once a month, learned how to do it, and wrote up the procedure for future reference. All they had were some incorrect hand-written notes.

I operated the sound system for the Wednesday evening program at the chapel.

We went to a concert of Irish music at a theater in Atlanta on Saturday. We stopped at Scott and Ellen’s house on the way for a few minutes. Michael and Laura Beth were there.

I operated the sound system for the chapel service.

We attended the monthly Friendship Force meeting. Margie had spent the afternoon shopping with Ellen, and she came directly from shopping to the meeting. I updated the web site with what happened at the meeting.

I’m publishing my memoirs. The manuscript has been submitted to the publisher. I thought I had done all I needed to to with photos, but what I had doesn’t meet their standards, so I’m now tracking down all the photos and re-scanning them to meet the publisher’s standards. In the process, I’ve been coming across some material in my files that I’m using to update the family web site.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Our Week

I’m sorry the pictures below are messed up. I did something wrong and couldn’t figure out how to fix it.

We spent Monday and Tuesday helping at Andy’s house–transporting to practices, walking Luke to school, fixing some meals, etc.

Wednesday we drove to the home of our good friends, Dave and Theresa Carlson. We had a nice visit with them, and then left for home. We got home about 3:00 Thursday afternoon.

Friday morning, I attended the meeting of the men’s club of Big Canoe, and wrote up the meeting for the paper. In the afternoon, we had our pictures taken for the chapel directory. In the evening, we played bridge with the duplicate group. We weren’t in the top three in score.

Saturday we functioned as greeters for other people having their picture taken. The job consists of making sure the information for the directory is correct, checking on the spelling of their names, and getting some forms filled out.

Today (Sunday) we went to Scott and Ellen’s house to help Scott celebrate his birthday.

I’ve been doing lots of web site work this week. Three web sites needed to be updated with newsletters that were published. I did some updating on the web site of the Big Canoe Emergency Response team. I did some updating on the web site of a friend who used to live in Georgia and now lives in Texas. I did some updating on the family web site with information that came in recent e-mails.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Pictures from Maine and New Jersey

Here are some pictures from our recent trip:

Our Two Weeks

Here’s the story of our two weeks.

September 19 we drove all the way to Wayne, New Jersey, to visit Andy and Dolores and the grandchildren. The reason we rushed is because Dolores had to be in her office all week, and Luke was home sick. We were able to stay with Luke, and thereby reduce the stress on Dolores. We drove carpools, fixed meals, and generally helped. On Friday, Margie had a meeting in New York, so I drove her to the bus stup and picked her up at the end of the day.

We started north on Saturday, and went the rest of the way to Canden, Maine, on Sunday. We boarded the Angelique, a 95-foot ketch, along with 29 other passengers and seven crew. We sailed all week, visiting various islands and small towns around Penobscot Bay. It was fun, and we learned a lot about Maine. We returned to the dock on September 30, and left Camden on October 1.

We stopped Saturday evening to visit a long-time friend who lives on the border of Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

We drove on to Wayne on Sunday, and were able to see a Luke football game and a Clare soccer game. Both of them lost–they had character-building experiences.

I hope everyone else had a good two weeks.

Our Week

Here’s the story of our week.

Margie was away all week with some Girl Scout friends. There was one from Atlanta, one from Boston, and two from San Francisco. They saw some of the touristy things in Atlanta, then went to Savannah, Georgia, to see the birthplace of United States Girl Scouts. She got back Sunday morning.

Tuesday morning, I got a call to participate in a search-and-rescue mission at a state park a few miles away. A lady had walked from her campsite the previous afternoon to go take a shower, and didn’t return. We searched the park all day, without success. She was found the next day about five miles from the park–apparently, she just got confused and wandered.

I worked at the Good Samaritan Health Center on Wednesday. One part of my responsibility is entering prescriptions into a computer data base, and I spent almost all my time doing that, and didn’t finish.

I’ve been asked to work on a web site for the Big Canoe Emergency Response Team, of which I’m a member. It uses a different set of support software than I’m used to, so it’s interesting to learn it.

I presided at a meeting of the Friends of the Pickens Library on Thursday evening. The speaker had written a novel about a crime in a retirement home.

I was asked to substitute in a three-table bridge group on Friday evening. I don’t know how I did, but I wasn’t in the top three.

I went to the meeting of Friendship Force Sunday afternoon. Margie skipped it, because she had so little time between one trip and the next. I updated the club web site with the information from the meeting.

I hope everyone else had a good week.

Our Week

Here is the story of our week.
We went to Scott and Ellen’s house on Tuesday, because his parents and sister were in town. We had a pleasant evening, then stayed overnight because Margie had an appointment for an eye checkup in the morning near where they live.

I got up early Wednesday evening to do my duties at the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center. It went very well, except a printer ran out of ink, and I couldn’t find the slot to replace the ink cartridge. I found a manual after I got home, so I’m ready the next time that problem occurs.

I went directly from that duty to the chapel, where I operated the sound system for a meeting.

I worked at the book sale for the Friends of Pickens Library on Friday and Saturday. We think we sold about 5000 books.

We had the monthly board meeting of Friendship Force this afternoon (Sunday). I’m not on the board, but Margie wanted me to accompany her.

I have been working lately on my memoirs, and prepared a final draft this week. I gave it to Margie to review, and she found a few problems.

A long-time friend for whom I took over maintenance of a family web site sent me a message with a new family picture she wanted posted to the web site. I did that, and made some other changes using my recently-obtained knowledge of some things about web site construction. I think it looks better than it did.

I hope everyone else had a good week.
